For more control over how your payments are routed or presented to customers, you can build your own Flexa Payments integration using the Flexa API. Before you embark on building your integration, take some time to understand the core concepts and resources that underpin Flexa Payments. ## Learn about using commerce intents Flexa Payments uses the concept of a commerce intent to represent any attempt to collect a digital currency payment from a customer. As a core resource of the Flexa API, commerce intents can be created and retrieved individually, but are often created indirectly through another resource (such as a link or flexcode). Commerce intents are designed to be very flexible in order to support the widest variety of payment interactions and other experiences. At a minimum, every commerce intent includes the following data elements: * **Debit** and **credit** objects, which track amounts requested to be paid (“debits”) against any amounts actually paid or credited (“credits”); * A **brand** or **MID** (for distributed deployments), which determines how a payment will be presented to a customer and how we will account for the resulting payout; and * A **status**, which indicates whether a commerce intent has been fulfilled according to its desired outcome (such as the completion of a payment or verification of an offer). To collect payment from a customer using a commerce intent, provide either your `brand` or `mid` identifier and then pass the `total` amount as a **debit** object, like so: ```json theme={null} { "asset": "assets/iso4217/usd", "brand": "brands/h30i5d4aP590c4", "debits": [ { "kind": "total_due", "amount": "43.90" } ] } ``` A commerce intent that includes a `total` debit object will be considered completed after the customer populates their payment `preferences` (usually through a Flexa-hosted commerce page or Flexa-enabled app) and fulfills any pending digital currency `payment_requests`. For more information on the parameters available for customizing commerce intents, see the commerce intent object documentation. ## Get access to prepare your API-only integration API-only integrations require a substantial amount of development effort, even from the most experienced payments enablement teams. Because an API-only integration requires you to create your digital currency payments acceptance UI from scratch, you will likely need to account for an extensive set of payment methods and edge cases, and even moreso if you expect to accept any more than a few digital currencies. If you would like to have your API keys enabled for an API-only integration, contact our [Partnerships team](mailto:partnerships@flexa.co) for access and further guidance. # In-person payments Source: https://docs.flexa.co/payments/acceptance-options/in-person Explore your options for enabling Flexa Payments in person. ## Compare experiences For personal sales channels, such as retail stores and restaurants, you can use Flexa Payments to accept digital currency payments using one or any combination of our lightweight apps and API integrations. At Flexa, we use the terms “customer-presented” and “merchant-presented” to help distinguish between in-person payments that are initiated by data displayed on a customer’s mobile device and data displayed on a merchant point-of-sale device, respectively. If your in-person acceptance equipment can present a dynamic QR code to customers at checkout, your optimal integration path will almost always consist of a merchant-presented payments experience like [payment pages](#use-payment-pages-with-qr-codes). If you can’t use a customer-facing display to present QR codes at checkout, you can still enable Flexa Payments at points-of-sale using customer-presented payments. Flexa’s customer-presented payment experience, making use of payment clips, is processed by your sales associates using any generic optical barcode scanner. While an approach using only payment clips will necessarily constrain your reach to a limited number of Flexa-enabled apps, we’ve also found that payment clips offer a 2–3× faster checkout experience, and may therefore be preferable when optimizing for customer time-in-lane. :::callout A note about the payment clips experience The payment clips experience is currently only available within a limited number of “Flexa-enabled” apps whose developers have integrated the Flexa Layers SDK. When these apps interact with a Flexa payments page, however, we automatically “upgrade” them to the payment clips experience instead. As a result, if you integrate with payment pages for your in-person payments, you can take advantage of all of the benefits of payment clips for Flexa-enabled apps, while also enabling acceptance for the broadest possible set of wallets. ::: Our [Sales team](mailto:sales@flexa.co) can help you navigate any other constraints that might impact your desired payments experience. For example, if you can’t offer a customer-facing display at checkout, but want to ensure your reach to all digital currency wallet apps, you might try integrating Flexa Payments [directly into your mobile app](/payments/acceptance-options/api) so that your customers can purchase closed-loop credit in advance of an in-person payment. Or, if your roadmap requires a phased approach, and a direct payment pages or payment clips integration is cost-prohibitive, you could try launching a pilot with an upstream gateway or through a limited deployment of our Point of Sale app. Whatever the circumstances, we’ll be glad to help you find a workable solution for your use case. ## Use payment pages with QR codes Payment pages are “checkout”–style web pages, hosted by Flexa, that your customer can access on their personal mobile device in order to make a digital currency payment according to their own preferences (such as using a desired app or payment currency). Our payment pages are meticulously designed to optimize for conversion from the widest variety of digital currency wallets in mobile contexts, and as a result, we highly recommend this Flexa Payments experience for most integrations. Payment pages are also easy to implement for in-person payments, requiring just 2–3 requests to the Flexa API for each completed digital currency authorization. Our [Sales team](mailto:sales@flexa.co) can help you choose a partner who is already providing Flexa payment pages through their payment gateway or middleware. Alternatively, you can integrate payment pages into your in-person checkout experience yourself with just a few lines of code: 1. Configure “Flexa” as a new tender type for your store associates to select on your point-of-sale terminal when a customer asks to make a digital currency payment. 2. Decide what style of payment page you want to appear on your customer’s mobile device. Possible options include `pay`, `buy`, or `donate`. The style you choose will determine the label on the submit button presented to the user (e.g., "Pay Now"). 3. When your point-of-sale device is ready to collect payment from your customer, create a link that includes the total payment amount you want to collect as a `total` debit object along with the optional confirmation `message` you want to display upon payment completion. 4. Next, render the `url` of the returned link object as a QR code. If space is limited on your customer-facing display, you can also try uppercaseing the URL before rendering the QR code in order to take advantage of the QR code format’s uppercase-only alphanumeric encoding mode], which conveys data more densely. 5. Prompt your customer to scan the QR code using the default camera app on their mobile device. Optionally, also display a prompt for your sales associates to help them guide your customer to payment completion (e.g., “Ask customer to scan QR code using their mobile camera app”). 6. Finally, watch for a `commerce_intent.completed` event that corresponds with the commerce intent identifier returned with the link object you created in step 3. This event indicates that the digital currency payment has successfully processed and that you can now proceed with closing out the transaction. ## Use the Point of Sale app Flexa Point of Sale is a streamlined, no-code solution for accepting digital currency payments from your customers using your own iPhone or iPad as an acceptance device. To accept a payment using the Point of Sale app, you should first ring up your customer’s purchase using your primary point-of-sale terminal. Then, switch to the Flexa Point of Sale app (either on the same device or on a separate, dedicated device) and key in the total amount to be paid. A QR code will be presented for your customer to scan with their personal mobile device so that they can complete a digital currency payment according to their preferences. When the customer’s payment is completed, Point of Sale will display a **✓ Done** message to indicate that the payment was approved. Point of Sale also enables more sophisticated acceptance scenarios, with support for dynamic inventory tracking, variants, cart management, and more. Activate Point of Sale using your Dashboard or request an activation code from our [Partnerships team](mailto:partnerships@flexa.co) to get started with Point of Sale for digital currency payments today. ## Integrate directly with the Flexa API If the Flexa-hosted payment page or payment clips aren’t sufficient for your needs, you can also build a custom in-person acceptance integration directly on top of commerce intents. With this approach, Flexa provides all of the necessary frameworks for requesting and capturing digital currency payments from your customers, and you provide the acceptance UI, either in a web page you host yourself or directly within your customer-facing acceptance interface (such as a PIN pad or kiosk). [Contact our Sales team](mailto:sales@flexa.co) for more information on building your own payments acceptance experiences with the Flexa API using commerce intents. # Online payments Source: https://docs.flexa.co/payments/acceptance-options/online Explore how to accept digital currency payments with Flexa. ## Compare experiences Within online sales channels, you can use Flexa Payments to accept digital currencies using [payment pages](#use-payment-pages-with-redirects) (some code required) or your own custom UI. Regardless of the path you choose, all digital currency payments processed by Flexa include complete fraud protection, full legal and regulatory compliance coverage, and guaranteed settlement at the time of authorization. | | Payment Pages | API Only | | ------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | | **OVERVIEW** | Quickly deploy our hosted UI for simple, fast, and wide-reaching acceptance. | Build your own integration for a fully bespoke experience. | | **INTEGRATION EFFORT** | Some code | Lots of code | | **SALES CHANNELS** | | | | **DIGITAL CURRENCIES** | All supported currencies | All supported currencies | | **CUSTOMER UI** | Responsive web only (desktop and mobile) | Responsive web and native mobile apps | | **OTHER FEATURES** | | | | **PARTNER AVAILABILITY** | Leading providers | Only available directly from Flexa | Because online payments occur in a merchant-presented context (i.e., within a webpage), there are no limitations on the types of digital currency payment methods that can be offered for acceptance. Therefore, given any app or network, Flexa Payments always presents your customer with the fastest and most customer-centric payment method in accordance with their individual payment preferences. Supported payment methods include: * Popular wallet adapters, such as [WalletConnect](https://walletconnect.com) and [Solana Mobile Wallet Adapter](https://github.com/solana-mobile/mobile-wallet-adapter) * QR code payment requests, implementing network-native specifications like [BIP 21](https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0021.mediawiki) * Web3 browser extensions, such as [Coinbase Wallet](https://www.coinbase.com/wallet) and [MetaMask](https://metamask.io) * Universal links * Copy-and-paste Where possible, Flexa Payments also implements app-specific affordances for optimal usability. For example, if a wallet app requires your customer to input their payment’s destination address prior to entering the amount, Flexa Payments will always present those fields for copying to the clipboard in the appropriate order. ## Use payment pages with redirects Payment pages are “checkout”–style pages, hosted by Flexa, that provide a responsive web experience for gathering all the necessary details to receive a digital currency payment from one of your customers. We’ve meticulously designed our payment pages to optimize for conversion from the widest variety of digital currency wallets, and as a result, we highly recommend this Flexa Payments experience for most integrations. Payment pages are also easy to implement, requiring just 2–3 requests to the Flexa API for each completed digital currency payment. Our [Sales team](mailto:sales@flexa.co) can help you choose a partner who is already providing Flexa payment pages through their payment gateway or middleware. Alternatively, you can integrate payment pages into your checkout experience yourself with just a few lines of code: 1. Add a new button to your checkout page that will present the Flexa Payments experience to any customers who want to pay with digital currency. We recommend using a button label like *Pay with Digital Currency* or *Pay with Flexa*. 2. Decide what style of payment page you want to display in your checkout flow. Possible options include `pay`, `buy`, or `donate`, and the style you choose will determine the label on the submit button presented to the user (e.g., "Pay Now"). 3. When your customer is eligible to begin checkout, create a link that includes the total payment amount you want to collect as a `total` debit object along with the `redirect_url` of the confirmation page to display upon payment completion. Or, for better performance, create a link before your checkout page is loaded, and update it only when your customer modifies their cart or shipping options. 4. Finally, attach the `url` of the returned link object to the button you created in step 1. Don’t open the payment page in a blank window—your customer will be automatically redirected to your confirmation page after a successful payment. 5. To monitor payment completion for your internal records, you should watch for a `commerce_intent.completed` event that corresponds with the commerce intent identifier that was returned with the link object you created in step 3. (Due to the possibility of a lost network connection, it’s not reliable to use the rendering of your customer’s confirmation page as an indicator of a completed payment.) ## Integrate directly with the Flexa API If the Flexa-hosted payment page isn’t sufficient for your needs, you can also build a custom integration directly on top of commerce intents. With this approach, Flexa provides all of the necessary frameworks for requesting and capturing digital currency payments from your customers, and you provide the acceptance UI. Flexa is also the only payments provider to guarantee settlement at the time of payment authorization. In other words, from the moment we authorize a payment at your point-of-sale, your funds are guaranteed against any unexpected reversals like chargebacks or returns. **Complete fraud protection** means you never have to worry about malicious activity or the work of bad actors, even after a payment has already been settled. We backstop each of our payments with a sophisticated collateralization system that ensures you will receive payouts for each of your payments—and in some cases even instantly, depending on your payout preferences. **Full legal and regulatory compliance** refers to Flexa’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a robust process for compliant and aboveboard handling and processing of all digital currency payments volume. We tackle the complexities of virtual currency compliance so that you don’t have to spend time or effort managing any legal obligations related to anti–money laundering and terrorist financing, customer verification, watchlist monitoring, or jurisdictional reviews. # Go-live checklist Source: https://docs.flexa.co/payments/checklist Use this checklist to ensure your integration is ready for prime time. Before you enable live mode and start accepting digital currency payments from your customers, review this checklist of best practices to ensure your integration’s success. ## Set the API Version
The Flexa API uses an [ISO 8601](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601)-formatted date for versioning. Although the API doesn’t require a version to return a response, you can reduce the impact of any future breaking changes by explicitly sending the latest version with all requests.
## Test edge cases
Your customers may not interact with your integration in the ways you expect. Flexa payment pages and the Flexa API are designed to handle various error cases, but you should ensure that you’re testing at least a few edge case scenarios to confirm that unexpected customer behavior doesn’t cause you to drop payments.
## Test on both mobile and desktop (as applicable)
If deploying your integration for in-person or payment clips, make sure to test the entire flow as your customers would experience it (using a comparable device). If deploying your integration for online payments, test on both mobile and desktop devices with a variety of browsers to ensure that your payment experience renders correctly and is [accessible](https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/wcag/) to your customers across each platform.
## Review payout reporting
Even though test mode payments don’t beget actual financial transactions, they’ll still be recorded on simulated payout reports, so that you can review whether the completed transactions match your own records. Take a look at these reports to ensure that the simulated payouts are as expected and that you’re accurately recording completed and failed payments.
## Review marketing materials (as applicable)
When a new business starts accepting digital currencies for the first time, it often inspires digital currency holders to share in their excitement with social media communities. Regardless of whether you are planning an announcement around expanded payments acceptance, you should prepare your marketing and social media teams for outreach they may receive from enthusiastic customers. As your integration progresses, our [Partnerships team](mailto:partnerships@flexa.co) will share best practices for managing the response to a new Flexa Payments integration and can also help coordinate joint marketing activities, such as a press release or social posts.
## Review your branding
When accepting digital currency payments, presenting an authentic brand image is critical for establishing trust with your customers. As you test your Flexa Payments integration, make sure that your brand details accurately reflect your most current brand identity so that your customers know exactly who they’re paying.
## Change your API keys
You or your developer can replace (or “rotate”) your Flexa API keys at any time. As a best-practice security measure, you should consider rotating your test and live API keys just before you go live with your integration, in order to eliminate any risk of your API keys being cached or compromised during development. We hope this checklist is helpful in facilitating your launch of Flexa Payments. As a reminder, you can always contact our [Partnerships team](mailto:partnerships@flexa.co) if you have any questions or concerns about how to best approach going live with your integration. Good luck!
# Supported currencies Source: https://docs.flexa.co/payments/currencies Discover the variety of currencies supported by Flexa Payments. Flexa Payments offers the broadest selection of digital currencies for payments acceptance, giving your customers an enormous amount of flexibility when it comes to making use of their digital assets. ## Payment currencies When you integrate Flexa Payments, your customers can use their preferred wallet app to send you any of the currencies listed below. Flexa then receives and instantly converts these currencies into [your preferred payout currency](#payout-currencies) to ensure that you never have to worry about undesired exposure to price volatility or slippage. ### A note about app compatibility Many wallet apps support only a subset of the currencies listed below. As a result, although your Flexa Payments integration enables all of these supported currencies, the choice of payment currencies shown to your customer will often be restricted by their choice of app. | | NAME | SYMBOL | PRIMARY USE | NETWORK SUPPORT | ISSUER | | :- | ------------------------- | ------- | ---------------- | ----------------------------------- | With Flexa Payments, you can receive your payouts in any currency or combination of currencies that you prefer. For example, you may choose to: * Receive all of your payouts as US dollars; * Receive 90% of your payouts as US dollars and the remaining 10% as bitcoin; * Receive \$10,000 of your monthly payouts as US dollars, and the remainder as Shib; or * Receive all of your Canada payouts as Canadian dollars, and your United States payouts as 50% US dollars, 25% ether, and 25% SOL. You can configure these payout preferences when you enable Flexa Payments, and change them at any time by reaching out to our [Partnerships team](mailto:partnerships@flexa.co). In addition to the digital currencies listed in the “Payment currencies” table above, Flexa Payments currently supports payouts in these national currencies: | NAME | SYMBOL | COUNTRY SUPPORT | | --------------- | ------ | ----------------------------------------------- | | Canadian dollar | CAD | Canada, United States | | Euro | EUR | Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), United States | | US dollar | USD | United States, El Salvador | ## Request support for another currency not listed Is there a currency you’d like to start accepting for payments that you don’t see listed above? We’re always looking to enable a wider variety of digital assets. Reach out to our [Partnerships team](mailto:partnerships@flexa.co) with your request and we’ll be in touch when we can begin enabling the new currency for payments and payouts. # Getting started Source: https://docs.flexa.co/payments/getting-started Discover how to start accepting digital currency payments. Accepting digital currencies doesn’t have to be complicated. Follow the steps below to get up and running quickly with Flexa Payments for your business. ## Sign up with Flexa The first step to getting started with digital currency payments acceptance is to sign up with Flexa. Contact our [Sales team](mailto:sales@flexa.co) to explore the features and capabilities of Flexa Payments and determine which products make sense for your use case. We’ll ask for details about your business entity as well as the brand or brands you want to enable for your customers. We’ll also confirm how you want to receive payouts. ### A note about eligibility At this time, only registered business entities in the United States, Canada, El Salvador, and SEPA can accept payments with Flexa. If you’d like to know when you can use Flexa to start receiving payments in any other country or as an individual, contact our [Support team](https://support.flexa.co). ## Choose an integration path There are many ways to integrate Flexa with your payments stack. The recommended and most typical path for both [in-person](/payments/acceptance-options/in-person) and [online](/payments/acceptance-options/online) payments is to process Flexa Payments with an existing payment gateway or your middleware provider. Of course, you can also [integrate directly with the Flexa API](/payments/acceptance-options/api) for greater control over routing or your customer experience. And if you don’t want to deal with code or manage a direct integration at all, you can enable standalone Flexa Payments by using any iPhone or iPad with our Point of Sale app. ## Get your API keys (Optional) If you’re planning to use Flexa Payments through a partner integration (such an existing payment gateway or payment service provider relationship), then your provider will use their own Flexa API keys. Don’t hesitate to reach out to our [Sales team](mailto:sales@flexa.co) if you have questions about what this option entails. Alternatively, if you’re planning to integrate Flexa Payments yourself, then you’ll need to gather your Flexa API keys and securely store them. When you’re ready to authenticate with the Flexa API, use either your test or live API key depending on which mode you want to enable: * API keys for accessing **test mode** are always prefixed with `secret_test_`. * API keys for accessing **live mode** are always prefixed with `secret_live_`. Your API keys will be provided by our Partnerships team after you sign up with Flexa. Please note that while your test API key is usable right away, your live API key will only become functional once your business is approved to process payments. ## Set up your integration Finally, set up your integration using our guides for accepting [in-person](/payments/acceptance-options/in-person) and [online](/payments/acceptance-options/online) payments. Don’t forget to [test your integration](/payments/testing), and when you’re ready to take your integration live, follow our [checklist](/payments/checklist) to ensure you haven’t missed any critical steps. **We’re excited to help you start enabling digital currency payments!** If you have any questions or run into any issues, our [Support team](https://help.flexa.network) is just an email away. Before your integration [goes live](/payments/checklist), you may want to make some test payments to ensure that everything is properly configured. For this purpose, Flexa offers **test mode**, a production-level testing environment that can help you evaluate your integration without generating any real-world financial transactions or other downstream effects. By default, all new Flexa Payments integrations start off in test mode. After your business has been approved to go live, you can enable test mode again at any time by flipping the test mode switch in your Dashboard or the Point of Sale app. If you want to force the Flexa API to respond in test mode, simply use your test mode API keys. ## About test credits Test mode is designed to help you test your integration using the same apps your customers use, and as a result, it doesn’t require the use of test networks or special app configurations. However, because test mode doesn’t process any real value, the only currency that Flexa supports in test mode is a valueless asset called “credit.” **Credit (CR)** is an [ERC-20 token](https://ethereum.org/en/developers/docs/standards/tokens/erc-20/) issued on the Ethereum main network. If you provide an Ethereum wallet address when you sign up with Flexa, we’ll send you enough credit to make several hundred test payments. And because credit is a standard ERC-20 token, you can easily send a portion of your credit balance to another address if you need to test from a different wallet or app. ### Only use credit with self-custody wallet apps We don’t recommend requesting or sending credit to an exchange or managed-custody wallet (for example, your Coinbase or Kraken account), because it’s unlikely that a third-party custody provider will be able to help you retrieve or send credit for testing purposes. Instead, use credit with a self-custody wallet app like [MetaMask](https://metamask.io), [Base](https://base.app), or [Rainbow](https://rainbow.me). ## Request more test credits If you run out of credit and need more for testing, reach out to our [Partnerships team](mailto:partnerships@flexa.co) or email [faucet@flexa.co](mailto:faucet@flexa.co) from the email address associated with your Flexa developer account. Make sure to include your wallet address in your email message.
